I'm obsessed with bonsai trees and I've learned that the gnarled roots of a bonsai are called the 'nebari' - and the more lumpy and twisted the nebari are, the more desirable the tree.
Here's the nebari of a boxwood shrub in my yard that I'm thinking of turning into a bonsai. I think it qualifies as being lumpy and twisted enough to hold its own in the world of bonsai fashion.
